41 innovations in 10 categories will be honored with the German Packaging Award 2024 Almost 250 submissions from 13 countries were received by the German Packaging Institute (dvi) as the organizer of Europe's largest packaging exhibition. The 41 winners of the German Packaging Award 2024 come from Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland and the UK. The dvi also received innovations from Denmark, France, Israel, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Hungary and the USA.

The innovations cover the entire range of materials, from glass (2), wood (1), flexible plastic (5), rigid plastic (8), metal (4), paper, cardboard and paperboard (11), multi-material (2) and new material (2) to corrugated cardboard (4) and composite material (1). At least one innovation won the prize in each of the ten categories of the exhibition.

The winners also include innovations that FACHPACK360° had already reported on before the nomination. For example, a reusable system for cooking oils or the toilet paper packaging from Wildplastic.

Specifically, there were five winners in Design, two in Digitalization, four in Functionality and Convenience, five in Logistics and Material Flow, six in Sustainability Overall Concept, four in Sustainability Material Substitution and Reduction, one in Sustainability Reusable, three in Sustainability Recyclability and Recyclate Use, three in Young Talent, two in New Material, two in Packaging Machines, Technology and Software, two in Product Presentation and three in Economic Efficiency.

Top Achievements in the Industry

“The large number of innovations submitted shows how committed and intensively the industry is working on ever better solutions for people, the economy and the environment. The high quality across the board and at the top proves how creatively, responsibly and successfully our companies are making progress and shaping the future”, says jury chair Marit Lemke, Senior Packaging Engineer Elanco Animal Health Inc., commenting on the results of Europe's largest packaging showcase.

Oliver Berndt, Head of Organization of the German Packaging Award, explains: “We see that traditional core functions of packaging are constantly being innovated and optimized. At the same time, added value is being created and new functions are being added. Always with the customer's requirements in mind and with remarkable gains in efficiency, safety, ecology, cost-effectiveness, branding and convenience.” Sustainability and efficiency almost always go hand in hand. “We have numerous combinations of functionality, aesthetics, sustainability and economy”, continued Berndt.

“Our winners solve big problems with small, intelligent tricks or create completely new possibilities and set new standards with a big leap”, says deputy jury chairman Prof. Stefan Junge, Professor in the Department of Packaging Technology at Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin.

Juror Arne Fehlhaber, Managing Partner & Creative Head of Brandpack, is particularly pleased about innovations in the field of design. “Design is not purely aesthetic, but a tool for communication to explain things and make them accessible. Almost everything only works on the market if it is understood, used correctly and ultimately thrown away correctly.”
