ESD - Risks

People and their behaviour pose the greatest risk with regard to ESD. For example, when employees handle electronic components without protective clothing and appropriate training. This is because clothing, skin and hair are susceptible to high charges. This is where an electronic discharge often occurs, as these carriers easily absorb charges. Feeling an electrical discharge when touching a door handle is a known ESD perception. However, the human perception threshold is often much higher (only from a voltage of 3000 volts), and so many discharges are not even noticed - but this can be harmful to electronic components or can even destroy them completely (from as little as 35 volts).

ESD-protected workstations from ERGO-line discharge the existing charges to earth in a controlled manner.

ESD - economic consequences

ESD is one of the biggest problems, particularly in the fields of electronics production, industrial electronics, computer technology, telecommunications technology, automotive electronics and many other production areas. Quality problems that only occur days, weeks or months after the product has been delivered to the customer are particularly insidious.

This can lead to complaints, repair and replacement costs, loss of image, loss of orders and loss of customers.

ESD protection standards

There are various international protection standards for ESD - the most important of which is DIN EN 61340-5-1, which regulates, defines and specifies ESD measures.

All ERGO-line ESD products are certified in accordance with this standard.

ESD - protective measures at the workplace

The ideal ESD workplace is located in an ESD protection zone, i.e. all materials in this zone are dissipative. This can be just a work surface, a zone, a room or an entire building. A protection zone includes dissipative floors. This can be achieved with appropriate ESD floor mats. ESD furniture such as tables, work surfaces, chairs and shelving must also be used. ESD lighting is often neglected. The housing and covers of ESD lamps are made of dissipative material or coated accordingly.

We are happy to advise you!

ERGO-line offers you expert advice for your ESD project! Plan your ESD protection zone with us! All ERGO-line ESD products are subject to an outgoing inspection: we check the discharge capability of every ESD workstation before delivery and approve it for dispatch.
